A study of the Word and the Greek roots of 1 Peter 2:24 make it plain as the noonday sun that Jesus’ body was broken and striped to pay for PHYSICAL healing not just to atone for sin so we may be saved.
I heard a pastor once make this distinction…
Salvation is a resurrection.
Physical healing is restoration.
The Greek roots in 1 Peter 2:24 speak of restoration, repair of what was broken.
I wish I could remember the name of this author, but he said something like…
Any Bible scholar who says 1 Peter 2:24 doesn’t include physical healing is either not a scholar or is a liar.
First, I just love straight shooters like this, and second this author is 100% correct.
Who is your pastor discipling its people to be like? Jesus or the Pharisees?
Jesus loves people, gave His body and shed His blood for them. He wants people well, captives free, for people to be loosed from the devil’s oppression (Isaiah 53; Isaiah 61; 1 Peter 2:24; Luke 13; Matthew 8:16-17; Acts 10:38). And has commission us, the church, as His co-laborers and ambassadors to also heal the sick and set captives free in His name.
“Pharisees” AKA those today operating under and influenced by demonic religious spirits hate when people get free, are on satan’s side, pushing his agendas but often blind to that fact. They love their traditions and positions more than God and people and selfishly desire to hold onto those instead of seeing people set free, healed, delivered. Often refer to the gifts of the Holy Spirit as of the devil, preach against healing in Jesus’ name, and even refer to sickness (works of the devil according to Jesus) as blessings (being used to call what is evil, “good,” as the Word warns).
John 5:1-15 – A Man Healed at the Pool of Bethesda
5 After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water. 4 For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool and stirred up the water; then whoever stepped in first, after the stirring of the water, was made well of whatever disease he had.
5 Now a certain man was there who had an infirmity thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be made well?”
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
8 Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.” 9 And immediately the man was made well, took up his bed, and walked.
And that day was the Sabbath. 10 The Jews therefore said to him who was cured, “It is the Sabbath; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.”
11 He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ ”
12 Then they asked him, “Who is the Man who said to you, ‘Take up your bed and walk’?” 13 But the one who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a multitude being in that place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
15 The man departed and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.
What do we see in this passage?
- Jesus sought him out and pursued him to heal him. It’s no different today. There’s an open invitation for healing for all who’ll receive what He ALREADY did, but we must receive it by faith: “By Jesus’ stripes, we were healed,” (1 Peter 2:24).
- Jesus didn’t rebuke him for wanting to be well or tell him he had to get his life right first and come back when he was perfect. No! He simply healed him because it’s who He is. It’s His name – Healer. It’s His kindness to us that leads us to repentance.
- Jesus didn’t tell him to wait because he was teaching him a lesson. No! The Word says the reason Jesus became man was to destroy the works of the devil – this includes healing from physical infirmities as ALL sickness is of the devil. He wants the devil and all his works off us. Get out of churches that tell you to stay in agreement with the works of the devil in your body or your loved ones! No sickness is God’s will for you or anyone. They’re insulting the broken and striped body of Jesus Christ and His finished work and purpose for coming into the earth.
- The only ones who hated seeing people free were the Pharisees. Anyone in the church, including pastors, who teach healing is not for today and not God’s will for all are not operating by the Word and Spirit’s leading but by one similar to the Pharisees. I literally see “Christians’ attack other Christians for saying healing is for today, paid in full for all by Jesus. Who do they sound more like in the passage above? Jesus or the Pharisees. The Word can’t lie.
He took up his bed, so he could throw it away! Jesus gave him a new beginning. He loves new beginnings. That’s why He came to make all things new and to become the Mediator of a new and better covenant, based on new and better promises. Hallelujah to the Lamb of God!
Jesus Himself became our Mediator – Job didn’t have the Christ as his Mediator which is why Christians today are not like him and can’t be like him. He wasn’t under this new and amazing covenant that we are in with God the Father through the Son. We are blessed indeed!
Flee from today’s “Pharisees” who make “the Word of God of no effect through their tradition which they have handed down.,” (Mark 7:13).
Jesus wants people well, including you.
Today’s “Pharisees” who have hardened their hearts to God and are under the influence of demonic religious spirits “preach” punishment, like some need to atone for our own sins through sickness, the ones Jesus already paid for. That’s works. Not grace.
So we have to earn our way through carrying sickness? No! Jesus carried it for us (Isaiah 53). We either believe Him or call Him a liar!
They preach people remaining in captivity, and the lie that God is using the works of the devil – physical infirmities – to teach people lessons. We don’t see this anywhere in the gospels.
No! Jesus healed them all and all manner of sickness and disease, NEVER referring to sickness as a blessing but ONLY as a work of the devil or oppression of the devil (Luke 13:16; Acts 10:38).
And the only things He did about these sicknesses and works of the devil? He healed and delivered people from them.
So are we called to line up our words with Jesus’ or the made up doctrines of man? The answer is obvious.
“And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you,’” (Luke 10:9).
It’s better to obey God than man.
