We should aim to continually improve our writing craft. And can do so by gleaning tips from other freelance writers’ books, blogs, and teaching videos. But only with discerning eyes and ears.
Recently, I came across the writings and teachings of a few freelance copywriters. Within minutes, my Holy Spirit surrendered senses rejected their methods. Puffed up and boasting in their psychological manipulation tactics. Teaching that your writing must “seduce” its reader. And using scarcity-driven manipulation intended to frighten readers into purchasing the wares of their clients.
I didn’t get too far into these writings and teachings before the Spirit of God in me said, “Not for you, My daughter. My ways are life. The world’s ways are death.”
Psalm 55:21 says, “The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.” This verse sounds a lot like what I saw coming from those freelance copywriting instructors.
God wants His blessings to flow to you AND your clients.
So, dear brother or sister, worldly methods are not for you and not of God. But you get to choose. What will it be, His beloved child?
An example of the bad fruit of God’s people using worldly methods is looking at the state of the church and its rapid decline over the years. I believe one of the main contributors to its decline was its adoption of unnecessary, worldly techniques and programs in a great many congregations. The devil set his “depend on the arm of flesh” trap and caught many of God’s very elect in it. By doing so, they became attraction-centered instead of Christ-centered. They exhausted themselves working to draw and keep members. How the Lord must have grieved watching His children depart from the solid rock of His Word.
In their toiling to be relevant, they sucked the life out of their ministries and selves by forsaking the life-giving ways of His Holy Word. The perfect instructions He already laid out for them in it. They opted for striving instead of thriving. For death instead of life.
Faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ, the Word, and absolute dependence on the unquenched Holy Spirit was everything they ever needed to succeed. But they rejected His ways out of fear.
I can see how this may have also contributed to leaders we’ve seen falling away from the church and renouncing their faith. Imagine the daily disillusionment they faced year after year in a church that chose death instead of life. Their role a lifeless cog in a machine instead of one burning with the love and fire of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When I considered this topic more, I saw that when God’s people turn to worldly methods, they are doing so based on fear and unbelief. Not believing His promises are what He says they are – “Yes and amen,” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
The other day, I was listening to a minister who exemplified dependence on God and rejecting worldly methods. The fruit of him choosing life eventually reaped massive blessings and favor upon his ministry. He told this story…
Many years ago, a fundraising organization contacted him. They promised to help him raise $1 million in a short amount of time citing recently raising over $20 million for another ministry. They guaranteed they could help him as well. But after listening to their plan, he rejected their dishonest methods.
Their tactics included straight up lies. They wanted him to say he supported orphanages in Africa. Then, they’d circulate fundraisers containing images of starving children with swollen bellies. Well, he didn’t support any orphanages in Africa and said he wouldn’t do anything dishonest to raise money. This didn’t phase the shady fundraising company who then said, “Well, it worked for the other minister. It doesn’t matter how you get the money.” Read that again.
That company did not fear the Lord. Then further tempted implying, “The other CHRISTIAN minister did it, then it should be okay with you too.” Can you believe their demonic audacity? After, he’d refused their tactics, the enemy attempted once more to entrap him for his destruction. He again said, “No way!” And told them to, “Get out!”
Praise God! He chose life, and the Lord blessed him abundantly for it. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart,” (Galatians 6:7-9).
Beautiful Christian freelance writer, remember, God’s people have something the world does not – His indwelt Holy Spirit. And that infinitely wise “sixth sense” will reject worldly words and programs. Let “every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” inspire your writing. You and your clients will succeed in the only way that matters – what’s right in our Father’s eyes.
These promises and reminders are for you, Christian freelance writer.
Simply take God for His Word by faith. Never fear walking in all His ways. Including for your Christian freelance writing business’s growth and prosperity. No shortcuts or shady tactics needed. Then reap blessings and the good fruit from what you’ve sown.
You’re a writer. And what do writers need? Words. The right ones at the right time. Well good news because Abba Father has your back:
“For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say,” (Luke 12:12). When you sit down to write, pray. Tell the Lord you are dependent upon His Holy Spirit, and ask Him to bless you with wisdom and the right words for your client. He will help you, pour verses, principles, and creative ideas into you that bless you and those you serve.
“Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist,” (Luke 21:14-15). Your clients’ readers aren’t adversaries, of course. But the same Holy Spirit is available anytime to give you wisdom and irresistible words you can stand by. And let you sleep at night.
“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him who is weary. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to hear as the learned,” (Isaiah 50:4). The prophet Isaiah spoke of Jesus here, but this is for you too. As it is written, “As Jesus is, so are we in this world,” (1 John 4:17). You don’t have a mini me Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit Jesus depended on while He ministered on the earth dwells in you. Out of YOUR belly shall flow rivers of living water to the thirsty (John 7:38).
“They were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he (Stephen) spoke,” (Acts 6:10). Seek to become Word and Spirit dependent in all you do to reap its blessed fruits. Godly wisdom and words that draw people with a pure heart and in truth.
Other important promises to remember as a Christian Freelance Writer:
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death,” (Proverbs 14:12).
“Direct my steps by Your Word, and let no iniquity have dominion over me,” (Psalm 119:133).
“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted,” (Matthew 23:12).
“God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble,” (James 4:6).
Closing prayer
Father, bless this reader abundantly. Thank You for showing him/her the way he/she should go in all matters. Including business ones. You are good and instruct Your children in Your Word how to allow Your blessings to flow to us. To keep ourselves from sin and reaping bad fruit and corruption. Lead this reader by Your Holy Spirit in all things, so he/she may glorify You and Your name in all he/she does. In Jesus’ name, amen.
I pray this post is a blessing to you. Thank you for stopping by.
